To: Mr. Michael Blanch

28 February 2014

Our Ref: AI0130262

Dear Mr. Blanch,

On behalf of the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Eamon Gilmore T.D., I would like to thank you for your recent correspondence.

The Tánaiste is aware of the tremendous work that has been done in identifying and locating the remains of those who perished on Staten Island after fleeing the Great Hunger in Ireland.

The Consulate General of Ireland in New York has been in contact with the Friends of Abandoned Cemeteries of Staten Island, who are organising the event on 27th April, and a member of the Consulate’s staff will represent the Irish Government on Staten Island on the day. The Consulate General was also represented at the funeral service for the victims in St. Peter’s Church in 2009.

Thank you for bringing this important event to the Tánaiste’s attention.

Yours sincerely,

Robert O’Driscoll
Private Secretary
