Irish Hunger Commemoration, Glastonbury, CT
The Irish American Home Society (IAHS), Glastonbury, CT, will offer a
commemorative program for the victims of the Irish Hunger of 1845-1851 on
May 19, 2013. The commemoration will begin with a Mass at 9:00 AM, in
the upstairs hall. A full breakfast will follow downstairs, at a cost of
less than $10 per person. A display of materials depicting the Hunger’s
causes and impacts and scenes of government created destitution and ruin
in the “worst social disaster of 19th century Europe” (The Irish Famine)
will be shown. Non-perishable food will be collected for the hungry/poor
and the food and net proceeds will be donated to the Malta House Pantry
in Hartford. The corresponding Irish Government’s Hunger commemoration
in 2013 will be held in Kilrush, Co. Clare, in May.
Those of us who are Irish born or of Irish descent, whether we are aware
of it or not, have had one or more of our immediate ancestors suffer and
probably die from starvation or starvation related diseases during the
“Famine” years, 1845-1851.
