Subject: Irish Gov’t Hunger Commemoration 2011
I heard from the Irish Consulate in NY this morning, as I’ve been going back and forth with them over the past few weeks. They now report that the “New” Hunger Committee and Ministerial responsibility are being reviewed and should be firmed up within the next few weeks, As such they are considering an official commemorative date for either Sept. or Oct. of this year. Nothing concrete yet. I was told we will be kept abreast of any decisions from the Committee/Minister.
I replied that we will be going ahead with our plans for this year, that is focussing on May, although informed them that people or groups are free to choose whatever time period suits them best. I also said that Sept. or Oct. would be appropriate periods since that is the time of the year that the fungal blight was first noticed or, if you pardon the pun, took root. I have no idea, as of this writing, what all this means, if
anything, for any Gov’t action in succeeding years.
