By Tom Power – Irish Famine Memorial Committee, Sydney, Australia
The Irish Famine Memorial Committee in Sydney, Australia has been commemorating the Great Hunger, annually, since the unveiling of the Australian Monument to the Great Irish Famine there in 1999. The day we selected was the last Sunday in August.
We were contemplating a change of day this year to a Sunday in May but as no word was coming from Dublin we have decided to hold our commemoration on the last Sunday of August as usual.
We are quite prepared to fall in with the rest of the Irish diaspora in 2012 but please can we have a definite day in May rather than a date to avoid confusion. For example can we all agree to a commemoration day on the third Sunday in May each year?
