From Don Mullan
Launch by Nettie Washington Douglass of:
The Narrative of FREDERICK DOUGLASS – an American Slave
which I have edited and introduced. Nettie Douglass is the great great granddaughter of Frederick Douglass.
The Foreword to this new expanded edition of the Narrative is by the President of Ireland, Mary McAleese, and the Afterword is by the CEO of Concern Worldwide, Tom Arnold.
Frederick Douglass played a key role in ending American slavery and is recognised as a founder of the Civil Rights Movement in America. Douglass visited Ireland in 1845 on an anti-slavery tour and was profoundly changed by his experience. He retained a life-long affection and respect for Ireland thereafter.
The launch is being hosted by Concern Worldwide at the Internationally renowned Glasnevin Cemetery Museum. It will also include a visit to the crypt of Daniel O’Connell, the Liberator, who was a friend of Frederick Douglass.
This will be an historic event as it is the first time since 1845 the Narrative has been published in Ireland. All attending the launch will be given the opportunity to visit the crypt of Daniel O’Connell and attend a wreath laying ceremony at the tomb of O’Connell by Nettie Douglass and her son, Kenneth.
