8th Dublin Famine Victims and Emigrants Memorial Day – An Gorta Mór
We will remember the one million and more Victims / Martyrs (figure unknown) and the Emigrants who left at the time of the Famine and the generation of Emigrants who built Communities and Countries all over the World and 60,000 Emigrants who left last year and the 1,000 people who leave our shores each week who are being scattered to the four corners of the Globe – lost to their families, loved ones and the Nation. They will be thought of on the 15th May 2011 by the Irish Global Family
The first part of the Ceremony takes the form of a “Pilgrimage” with people dressed in costume “rags” will leave from the Garden of Remembrance led by a lone piper down O’Connell Street and onto the Famine Sculptures at Custom House Quay where the second part of the Ceremony takes place “COMMEMORATION” where the Lord Mayor of Dublin Councillor Gerry Breen will lay a wreath followed by one minute’s silence to their memory. Bouquets of flowers will be laid at the individual famine sculptures, a bouquet of flowers in the shape of a ship is lowered into the River Liffey to remember the Emigrants past and present and the Victims who died on the Coffin Ships at sea. There are flowers for the people to participate in the Ceremony. The third and final part in the “Celebration of Life”, Craic agus Ceol – Pete St. John and Friends will sing the Fields of Athenry on board the Jeanie Johnson Famine Ship for the Survivors of the “Famine” – An Gorta Mór.
As part of the National Famine Memorial Day we ask all the people on the Island of Ireland, the Emigrants and the 70 million people who are proud and honoured to claim Irish ancestry to observe one minute’s silence at 2.00 pm (local time) on Sunday, 15th May 2011.
Today we remember the men, women and children who are dying of starvation and in poverty in a World of plenty.
The Jeanie Johnson Famine Ship Museum will be open to the public on Sunday, 15th May 2011 between 12.00 noon and 2.00 pm FREE OF CHARGE
All are welcome to the Commemoration and Celebration of Life which will take place on Sunday, 15th May 2011 at 2.00 pm assemble at the Garden of Remembrance.
