Push for Recognition and More Education

This letter from Jim Gallagher shows that we can all make our own points when the opportunity arises. This we should do – every contribution helps.

Mr. MacPhilib,

Since you are with the Museum in Castlebar (my Father’s family is from Claremorris), I have to ask – will the Museum add an exhibit about the causes, experiences and travails of the Irish peasants (largely in the west of Ireland) and the inpacts of the Irish Hunger on Irish life, language, psyche, politics and economics?  Many Irish Americans have reported to me that there is an alarming absence of this material in the National Museum, whether it is in Collins Barracks or Castlebar.  This is a horrific segment of recent Irish history, that has been for too long relegated to the recesses of the Irish memory, and should be an integral component of Irish history and education.

Jim Gallagher
