New York Commemoration Events

Highlights of President McAleese’s visit to New York

Thursday, May 20 – Arrive in NY.

Friday, May 21 – AM – Breakfast at the NY Stock Exchange and a visit to a school in Brooklyn;

12:45 PM  Visit AHIS (80th & 5th) to meet representatives of older Irish American community.  Celebrate 1st anniversary of  Senior Connect.

5:00 PM  Opening of Quinnipiac’s An Gorta Mor exhibit, in the Consulate, followed by a small reception (5:45 PM).

Saturday, May 22 –  Deliver Commencement Speech at Fordham University Graduation ceremony – 9:30 AM.

Sunday, May 23 –  Synagogue visit on Sunday (8:30 AM) will include songs in Irish, English & Yiddish.  Visit is to mark the generosity of the New York Jewish community to the people of Ireland during An Gorta Mor – The Great Hunger.   See details on Invitation below.

The visit to the Synagogue will be followed by a Mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral (10:10 AM).

The visit to Mercy Corps (across the street from the Hunger Memorial in Battery Park) and to the Hunger Memorial is to commence at 1:45 PM.

Minister Pat Carey will attend a Fleadh in Rockland County and then visit the Hunger Memorial in Westchester County.   The Irish Consulate would like to see a large gathering of AOH and all others at the Westchester site.

Similarly, they would like to see a large turnout at all events – at the Synagogue, at the Cathedral, and at the Battery Park Memorial on Sunday.
